Vibo Valentia occupies a high terrace in Calabria, overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast and the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia. The historic centre gathers around the summit, where the Norman-Swabian castle stands, and streets descend from it in bending lines across the slope. The coast itself lies a few kilometres away, reached by roads that wind down to Vibo Marina and its port.
That separation between hill town and seaside harbour is what makes the map distinctive. The upper city shows a dense, irregular old core with newer blocks spreading along the high ground, while the lower part of the frame opens toward the shoreline. The site has been settled for a very long time. It was the Greek colony of Hipponion before becoming the Roman Vibo Valentia, and stretches of the ancient Greek walls survive on the edge of town.
