Athi River lies in Machakos County on the open plains south-east of Nairobi, and its map is organised by transport. The Mombasa Road runs through the area as a major artery, joined by the Standard Gauge Railway and older rail lines. The Athi River itself winds across the plains in a shallow, irregular course.
