Hugli Map Poster & Print
Hugli, usually paired with neighbouring Chinsurah as Hugli-Chinsurah, stretches along the west bank of the Hooghly River north of Kolkata. On a map it is a linear town: a long, narrow strip of dense streets following the curve of the river, with the Grand Trunk Road and the railway running roughly parallel inland, and fields and ponds beyond them.
Its waterfront records several centuries of trade. The Portuguese established a settlement here in the sixteenth century, and nearby Bandel is known for its old Portuguese church. The Dutch later made Chinsurah a trading post, and the Hooghly Imambara, a large nineteenth-century Shia congregational hall with a clock tower, still faces the river.
A Hugli map poster traces this riverside settlement from one end to the other, with the broad water on one side and the dense town pressed against it. The curving river, the ghats and lanes meeting the water, and the parallel lines of road and railway give the composition a strong, flowing direction quite unlike a compact city.

Riverside heritage
The waterfront is lined with buildings from the Portuguese, Dutch and later periods, including the Hooghly Imambara, set close to the ghats and lanes leading down to the water.
Linear town plan
Streets, road and railway run parallel to the river for many kilometres, so the town takes the form of a long, narrow band rather than a single centre.
