Mountain basin
Steep, dry ridges enclose the town on several sides, so the street network settles into the valley floor and thins out quickly where the slopes begin.

Keren Map Poster & Print
Keren lies in the highlands of Eritrea's Anseba region, at roughly 1,400 metres, in a basin ringed by rugged, bare mountains. On a map the town appears as a cluster of streets filling the valley floor, with the terrain pressing in from every side. The roads that reach it have to wind through passes, and that sense of enclosure is the first thing the eye notices.
The town grew as a crossroads between the coast, the capital Asmara and the western lowlands, and its layout still reflects that role. Main roads converge on a compact centre with a regular street pattern from the Italian colonial period, while newer quarters spread more loosely toward the slopes. The mountains around Keren were the site of a decisive battle in 1941 during the East African campaign.
A Keren map poster captures a town defined by its setting. The street grid is modest in size, but the way it sits inside a bowl of high ground gives the composition weight. Keren is also known for its weekly livestock market and for the small shrine of Mariam Dearit, set inside the trunk of an old baobab tree outside town.

Converging roads
Routes from Asmara, the Red Sea coast and the western lowlands meet here, drawing clear lines across the map toward the town centre.
Colonial-era centre
The core keeps a regular grid of streets laid out in the Italian period, a tidier pattern than the looser neighbourhoods that climb toward the hills.
