The Passaic River defines Paterson. It swings around much of the city in a wide loop before heading south. At the Great Falls the river drops over a basalt ledge into a narrow chasm, and that drop is the reason the city was founded. In 1791 the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, backed by Alexander Hamilton, chose this site for a planned industrial town powered by water. Paterson later became known as Silk City for its textile mills.
