Portage sits directly south of Kalamazoo in southwest Michigan, and from above it reads as a patchwork of residential loops, broad arterial roads and water. Dozens of lakes, large and small, break up the street pattern, so neighbourhoods curve around shorelines rather than following a strict grid.
