Schleswig sits at the inner end of the Schlei, a long, narrow arm of the Baltic that reaches far inland. On a map the town traces the northern shoreline in a shallow curve. The water lies open to the south and east, and the built-up streets thin out toward fields and woodland to the north. The Schlei itself reads as a pale ribbon that widens and narrows as it heads toward the sea.
The historic centre clusters around St. Peter's Cathedral, whose spire marks the old town's densest block of lanes. To the west, Gottorf Castle stands on its own island, joined to the mainland by causeways. West of the centre, Gottorf Castle occupies an island surrounded by water and reached by causeways. It gives the western edge of town a clear, self-contained outline.
