Thal Map Poster & Print
Thal lies high in the valley of the Panjkora River, in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The valley is narrow here, and the settlement follows it, with houses, shops and fields packed onto the flat ground by the water and onto the lower slopes. On a map, the river and the road beside it form the main axis, and everything else hangs off them.
Thal is best known as the gateway to the Kumrat Valley, the forested highland valley to the north that has become a popular destination for travellers in summer. The road into Kumrat begins here and follows the river upstream. Thal is also noted for its traditional wooden mosque, an example of the timber architecture of the Dir Kohistan region.
A Thal map poster is shaped entirely by the mountains. The river draws a single bold line through the frame, the road runs close beside it, and the built area forms a narrow strip that thins out into tracks and paths toward the slopes. It is a spare composition with strong movement along the valley, very different from any lowland town.

Road to Kumrat
The road north toward the Kumrat Valley follows the river upstream from Thal, a thin line that tracks every bend of the water through the mountains.
Valley-floor settlement
Houses and fields fill the narrow strip of level ground, leaving the steep slopes almost empty on the map and giving the town a long, linear form.

Maʼnoga ega xarita
Thal appeals to people who have travelled into Kumrat and remember the road up the valley, and to families from Dir who now live elsewhere. The map captures how a mountain town fits its valley, something photographs rarely show clearly.
Add a title, perhaps the date of a trip, and the coordinates line, then pick a style. Classic black & white and Noir suit the stark valley shape well. Digital files are $9 and include a PDF and a 300 DPI PNG in each of six sizes.
