Te mapa
Aarschot lies in Flemish Brabant, in the Hageland region north-east of Leuven, on the banks of the River Demer. It is an old town with a compact centre, and its map shows the traces of that history: streets converging on the central market square, a river bend enclosing part of the town, and an irregular pattern of lanes that predates modern planning.
The town's landmark is the Church of Our Lady, built in the distinctive brown ironstone of the region, whose tower rises above the market square. On a hill above the town stands the Aurelianus Tower, a remnant of the medieval defences. Rail lines cross the town, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward across the flat land of the Demer valley.
An Aarschot map poster shows a town shaped by a river and a hill: the Demer curving through, the dense core around the market, and the broader residential streets beyond. In black and white, the old centre becomes a knot of short, angled streets, while the river and railway provide the long, sweeping lines that hold the composition together.
The river winds through Aarschot on its way west, curving past the old centre and giving the poster a soft, flowing line through the town.
Streets converge on the central market square beside the church, forming a dense, irregular knot typical of medieval Flemish towns.
A hill above the town carries the medieval Aurelianus Tower, and the green slopes around it appear on the map as a quiet open area beside the streets.
