Te mapa
Afyonkarahisar grew at the foot of a dramatic volcanic outcrop that rises abruptly from the plain, with the ruins of a castle on its summit. The name itself refers to that landmark, the black fortress. On the map the rock is an unmistakable blank shape in the city's centre, around which the old quarter's winding lanes curl tightly.
Below the rock, the older neighbourhoods keep traditional Ottoman houses and mosques, while newer districts spread outward in straighter streets across the high plain of western Anatolia. The city is an important road and rail junction, and major routes between Istanbul, Ankara, Konya and the Aegean meet here, their lines converging clearly on the plan.
The province is known for its thermal springs, its marble and its food, especially kaymak, a rich clotted cream, and sucuk sausage. Nearby Kocatepe was the command post for the Great Offensive of 1922 during the Turkish War of Independence. An Afyonkarahisar map poster frames all this around the single rock that has defined the town for centuries.
The volcanic outcrop rises sharply from the centre of the city, its steep sides and summit fortress creating a striking void surrounded by dense streets.
Narrow, winding lanes lined with traditional houses wrap around the base of the rock, forming the most intricate and irregular texture on the map.
Highways and railway lines converge on the city from several directions, strong straight strokes that emphasise its role as a junction on the plateau.

Koteā ko Afyonkarahisar
Afyonkarahisar is memorable to anyone who has passed through on the way to the coast, soaked in its thermal baths, or grown up beneath the castle. The rock at its centre makes for a map with a natural focal point.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates, such as a family name or the date of a visit, and choose one of five styles. Noir makes the castle rock stand out, while Paper recalls an old printed town plan.
