Afzalgarh lies in Bijnor district in western Uttar Pradesh, close to the border with Uttarakhand. The surrounding country is part of the wide Gangetic plain, flat and heavily farmed, with the Himalayan foothills further to the north. The town is small, and on a map it appears as a dense core of narrow lanes with roads leading out to neighbouring villages.
Sugarcane and grain dominate the fields in this part of the state. From above, the land around the town is divided into a fine patchwork of plots, tracks and small watercourses.
