Te mapa
Ajka lies in Veszprém county, on the western side of the Bakony hills in Hungary. Its map is stretched and irregular rather than centred. During the twentieth century the town absorbed several villages and mining settlements. As a result, the built area reads as a chain of neighbourhoods linked by main roads and a railway line, with wooded slopes rising behind them.
Industry drove the town's growth. Coal was mined here for generations, and an alumina works and a power plant left large rectangular footprints on the map. Ajka is also known for glassmaking, with crystal made in the town for well over a century. In 2010 its name became widely known after a red mud reservoir at the alumina plant failed and flooded neighbouring villages.
An Ajka map poster sets these layers side by side: the housing estates, the older village cores, the industrial zones and the green edges of the Bakony. It is an honest, undecorated portrait of a working town, and it shows how a place can be assembled from several smaller ones.
Former villages and mining settlements are now districts of Ajka. On the map they appear as separate clusters of streets, joined by longer roads across the valley.
The large, geometric sites of the alumina and power works sit apart from the housing. Their straight edges and open yards contrast with the smaller residential blocks.
Wooded hills rise along the edges of the town, and their slopes limit where streets can run. This gives the map its long, uneven outline.

Koteā ko Ajka
For people from Ajka, this map carries the names of districts that were once separate villages, the estates where families lived and the works where many of them were employed. It makes a considered gift for someone who has moved away from the Bakony.
