Alicante lies on Spain's Costa Blanca, and its map is organised around the sea. The port and marina take up the waterfront. Beaches run away to the north and east, and a long palm-lined promenade separates the harbour from the city. Behind it the grid of the modern centre spreads inland. The old quarter crowds against the foot of Mount Benacantil.
On top of Benacantil stands the Castle of Santa Bárbara, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain. The Explanada de España, the seafront promenade, is paved with millions of tiles laid in a wave pattern.
