Te mapa
Ans lies immediately west of Liège, on the plateau above the Meuse valley. On a map it reads as a continuation of the city, a dense network of streets built during the industrial period, crossed by railway lines and bordered by major motorway junctions. There is little open space in the core, though green patches appear where former mine sites have been reclaimed.
The area's history is tied to coal. Spoil heaps, known locally as terrils, remain in the landscape and show up as rounded or irregular green shapes among the houses. The railway climbing from Liège to Ans is known for its steep incline, one of the notable gradients on the Belgian network.
Within the commune stands the Fort de Loncin, one of the ring of forts built around Liège, which was destroyed during the German attack in August 1914 and is now a memorial. An Ans map poster captures the density of an industrial suburb, the diagonal rail lines and the historical traces scattered through its streets.
The line rising from the Meuse valley up to Ans is known for its steep grade, and on the map the tracks cut a strong diagonal through the urban fabric.
The remains of this 1914 fortress sit within the commune, a distinctive footprint among the surrounding residential streets and a significant memorial site.
Former coal spoil heaps, now largely vegetated, appear as rounded open areas among the houses, remnants of the mining past visible in the plan.
