Te mapa
Aurangabad, officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2023, sits in a broad valley on the Deccan plateau in Maharashtra. Low hills rise to the north. The Kham River passes the old city, and the historic core was once enclosed by walls pierced by many gates. That history earned it the name City of Gates, and several gates still stand at the edges of the old quarter.
An Aurangabad map poster shows a dense, irregular old city beside more orderly later cantonment and suburban districts. The road network spreads out toward the industrial area at Waluj and toward the hills. Bibi Ka Maqbara, the seventeenth-century tomb often compared to the Taj Mahal, sits in a formal walled garden at the city's northern edge.
The city is the usual starting point for visiting the Ellora Caves and the Ajanta Caves, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the hilltop fortress of Daulatabad. On the map, the roads leading out toward these sites run through the surrounding hills and give the poster long lines that extend beyond the urban area.

The Mughal tomb sits in a symmetrical walled garden. Its rectangular enclosure and axial paths are clearly visible on the northern side of the city.
Routes run north-west toward Daulatabad and Ellora and further on toward Ajanta. They link the city to its famous rock-cut monuments through the hills.
