Aversa lies on the flat, fertile plain between Naples and Caserta. Its historic centre is a tightly packed cluster of narrow streets and churches, whose rounded outline follows the medieval city limits. Around it, later districts form straighter blocks, and main roads run out toward Naples and the neighbouring towns that nearly merge with it.
Aversa is known as the first Norman county in southern Italy, granted in the early eleventh century, which gives it a special place in the region's history. It is also the birthplace of the composer Domenico Cimarosa, and the surrounding countryside is associated with buffalo mozzarella.
