Te mapa
Avezzano is the main town of the Marsica area in Abruzzo, on the north-western edge of the Fucino basin with mountains rising behind it. Until the nineteenth century the basin held Lake Fucino, one of the largest lakes in Italy. Attempts to drain it went back to Roman times, and Prince Alessandro Torlonia finally completed the work, turning the lake bed into farmland.
That history is visible on any map. East of the town lies an enormous flat area divided into long, straight fields and roads, an engineered pattern encircled by a road that traces the old shoreline. It is one of the most geometric agricultural landscapes in Italy, and it gives the region an unmistakable shape from above.
The 1915 Marsica earthquake destroyed almost all of Avezzano, and the town was rebuilt afterwards. That is why its centre has broad, regular streets instead of the tangled lanes found in most Italian hill towns. An Avezzano map poster sets the town's modern grid against the huge, ordered plain, with the mountains closing the view.

A road and canals follow the line of the vanished lake around the basin. They draw a smooth oval boundary between the flat plain and the surrounding hills.
Rebuilt after the 1915 earthquake, the town centre has wide, regular streets and open squares. It is noticeably more ordered than the medieval layouts typical of the region.

Koteā ko Avezzano
Avezzano's story is written in its streets and fields: a lake that disappeared and a town that had to begin again. A map makes that story visible at a glance, which is why it appeals to people from the Marsica and to anyone interested in how landscapes are made.
