Az Zarqā is a town in Damietta Governorate, in the northeastern part of the Nile Delta. The area around it is intensively farmed. Fields are divided into narrow strips, and irrigation canals and drainage channels run through them in every direction.
The town itself is dense. Its streets are closely packed and mostly irregular, as in most Delta towns that grew outward from an old centre. An Az Zarqā map poster shows this dense core surrounded by a finer pattern of fields and water channels.
In the Delta, water decides where roads go. Many roads follow canal banks, and bridges mark the places where routes cross. On the map this creates a network of parallel lines that runs through the farmland and into the town.
