Babor is in Sétif province, in northeastern Algeria, in the Babor mountains, part of Lesser Kabylie. The town sits on hilly ground below the high peaks of the range. From above, the streets follow the slopes and ridges. The centre is compact, and houses spread along the roads that wind through the valleys and up the hillsides.
The mountains give the area its identity. Djebel Babor, one of the highest peaks in the range, has forests of cedar and fir. It is known as the place where the Algerian nuthatch, a small bird found almost nowhere else in the world, was discovered in 1975.
