Te mapa
Baeza stands on a ridge in the province of Jaén, above the upper Guadalquivir valley. From above, the historic centre is a close network of narrow streets and small squares, with palaces, churches and the old university built side by side. Outside the town, the landscape is almost all olive groves, whose regular rows give the surroundings a finely textured appearance.
Together with neighbouring Úbeda, Baeza was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 for its Renaissance architecture and urban planning. The poet Antonio Machado taught French here in the early twentieth century, and the town remembers his time in it. On the map, the old centre ends quite sharply where the ridge drops toward the valley.
A Baeza map poster shows the monumental core and the plainer growth beyond it, with the ridge edge acting as a natural boundary. In the Paper or Sand styles, the town takes on the warm tones of the stone it was built from.
The old town packs palaces, churches and squares into a tight network of streets, the core of Baeza's World Heritage listing.
The town ends abruptly where the land drops toward the Guadalquivir valley, giving the southern edge of the map a clear, deliberate line.
Olive groves cover the land around Baeza, and their tracks and field boundaries form a subtle, even background across the poster.
