Banda is a town in Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh, in the historic region of Bundelkhand. It is not the larger Banda across the state border in Uttar Pradesh. From above, the town is a dense cluster of lanes around its market area, with newer housing spreading along the main roads and fields opening out on every side.
The surrounding landscape is typical of the Bundelkhand plateau. Undulating farmland, patches of scrub and low rocky hills are crossed by streams that run full in the monsoon and dry up later in the year. Tanks and small reservoirs, a traditional feature of the region, catch rainwater and appear on the map as scattered, rounded shapes.
