Te mapa
Bāramūla sits at the western end of the Kashmir Valley, where the Jhelum River leaves the broad valley floor and heads into the mountains. From above, the river runs through the middle of town. The older quarters line both banks, bridges stitch the two sides together, and steep slopes close in from the north and south.
The name is traditionally traced to Varahamula, linked to the boar incarnation of Vishnu. The town has long been a gateway on the route running west down the Jhelum valley, and it served for generations as the valley's western point of entry. Orchards and paddy fields fill the flatter land upstream.
A Bāramūla map poster is shaped almost entirely by the river. The long line of the Jhelum carries the eye across the frame, and the town's streets bunch along it before giving way to hillside contours. The result is a narrow, directional composition, quite unlike an ordinary grid city.
The river flows through the centre of town and sets its entire orientation. Streets and neighbourhoods follow its banks on both sides.
Several bridges link the two halves of town. On the map they appear as short, strong strokes across the water.
Here the valley narrows, and mountain slopes press in on the town. The open fields to the east contrast with the tighter terrain to the west.

Koteā ko Bāramūla
For Kashmiris and anyone who has travelled the Jhelum valley, Bāramūla is a threshold town, the point where the valley ends and the mountains begin. A map of it holds that sense of place in a single image.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a family name or the year you left. It comes in Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint makes the river especially clear.
