Barnagar is a town in Ujjain district in western Madhya Pradesh, on the Malwa plateau. The land around it is level and heavily farmed, and from above the town appears as a tight, irregular core of lanes surrounded by fields in every direction. It has the typical shape of a market town that grew slowly around its bazaar rather than following a plan.
Roads leave the centre toward nearby villages and larger towns in the district, and a railway line passes close by. These routes give the map its structure. Between them, the older streets bend and narrow, while newer neighbourhoods on the outskirts are more regular, and the change from one pattern to the other is easy to see in print.
