Barreiros lies in the south of Pernambuco, close to the Atlantic coast and the border with Alagoas, in the Zona da Mata that has been devoted to sugar cane for centuries. From above, the town sits beside the Una River, with a compact grid of streets on the low ground and rolling hills of cane rising on every side.
The river curves through the landscape toward the sea, with smaller streams joining it from the surrounding valleys, and the main roads of the south coast pass nearby. Beyond the town edge, fields cover almost everything, broken only by farm roads, the lines of watercourses and the scattered buildings of rural properties.
