Te mapa
Basingstoke sits in north Hampshire beside the M3, about 50 miles southwest of London. From above, its most recognisable feature is the ring road that loops around the town centre, studded with roundabouts, which has earned it the affectionate nickname Doughnut City. The older market-town core lies inside that ring, and housing estates spread outside it in curving closes and crescents.
The town grew dramatically after it was designated for expansion in the 1960s, when overspill from London brought new estates, offices and industry. The large Festival Place shopping centre now fills much of the middle. The River Loddon rises near the town, and Jane Austen, who was born in nearby Steventon, is commemorated by a statue in the town centre.
A Basingstoke map poster turns what locals joke about into something rather handsome. The ring road forms a strong circle, the roundabouts punctuate it like beads, and the estates beyond fill the frame with soft curving patterns. It is a distinctive plan, and few English towns look so clearly designed from above.
The loop of dual carriageway around the centre reads as a bold, nearly closed shape, giving the whole poster a clear focal point.
Junctions along the ring and throughout the town are handled by roundabouts, which appear on the map as small circles repeating across the street network.
Post-war residential districts spread outward in crescents, closes and looping roads. This soft, organic pattern contrasts with the geometry of the ring road.
