Te mapa
Bayview-Hunters Point takes up the southeastern edge of San Francisco, where the city meets the bay. On a map the neighbourhood is a mix of grids set at different angles. They bend around hills such as Bayview Hill and stop at an irregular shoreline cut by basins, piers and filled land.
For much of the twentieth century the area was defined by the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, which closed in 1994 and has since been gradually redeveloped. Third Street is the neighbourhood's commercial spine, and a light-rail line now runs along it. To the south, Candlestick Point marks the former site of the stadium where the Giants and 49ers once played.
A Bayview-Hunters Point map poster shows how varied this part of the city is. It holds residential blocks on the slopes, industrial parcels near the water, open space along the shore and the large footprint of the shipyard at the tip of the point.
Third Street cuts straight through the neighbourhood from north to south and gives the map a firm central line. The street grids turn and change angle on either side of it.
The former naval shipyard sits at the end of the point. Its dry docks and piers make large geometric shapes against the water.
From India Basin to Candlestick Point the shoreline twists in and out. Coves, parks and reclaimed land give the edge of the poster a detailed, uneven outline.
