Bei’an is a county-level city in Heilongjiang, in China's far northeast, in the gently rolling farmland between the Lesser Khingan range and the Songnen Plain. On a map the town is a compact cluster of streets surrounded by very large, regular fields. The farmland's geometry is almost as striking as the city's.
The urban area follows a clear, largely rectangular plan. Wide, straight roads divide the city into blocks, and a railway line runs through it, with its yards and sidings drawing long parallel lines.
