Phosphate landscape
Mining areas around the town form large, layered shapes with networks of access tracks. They cover far more ground than the town itself and dominate the wider view.

Te mapa
Ben Guerir lies in the Rehamna area, on the flat plain between Casablanca and Marrakesh. For decades its identity was tied to phosphate mining. The mining sites around the town are still among the largest shapes on any map of the area, their stepped pits and haul roads spread across the landscape.
More recently the town has become home to Mohammed VI Polytechnic University and a planned new district designed as a green city. On the map this appears as a contrast. The older town, with its compact streets and markets, lies on one side. On the other is a newer quarter of wide avenues, landscaped spaces and campus buildings laid out with deliberate order.
A Ben Guerir map poster shows a place in transition, with mining, an older town and a modern campus sharing the same plain. In black and white the different textures stand out clearly, from the tight lanes of the centre to the long curves of new roads and the broad industrial ground beyond.
Mining areas around the town form large, layered shapes with networks of access tracks. They cover far more ground than the town itself and dominate the wider view.
The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University campus and the surrounding new quarter are laid out with broad roads and open landscaping. They form a clearly planned zone beside the older streets.
Flat, dry land surrounds Ben Guerir, and the motorway between Casablanca and Marrakesh passes nearby. It gives the map long, straight lines and a great deal of calm space.

Ben Guerir now brings together miners' families, long-time residents and students and researchers from across Morocco and abroad. A map of the town suits all of them: a simple record of the streets and campus where an important stretch of life took place.
