Te mapa
Blaj lies in Alba County, in the heart of Transylvania, where the Târnava Mare and Târnava Mică rivers join. On a map, this meeting of two rivers is the town's defining feature. The streets are arranged around it, and the flat land near the confluence is bordered by the low hills that rise around the valley.
Blaj holds an important place in Romanian history. It became the centre of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church, and its schools and printing presses made it a cultural centre, which earned it the nickname "Little Rome". In 1848, a large assembly of Romanians gathered on the field outside town, now known as the Field of Liberty (Câmpia Libertății).
A Blaj map poster shows the two rivers merging, the compact historic core with the cathedral and school buildings, and the open expanse of the Field of Liberty nearby. Roads and railways run along the valley, adding long lines to the composition. It is a small town map with a clear structure and a meaningful story behind it.
The Târnava Mare and Târnava Mică meet at Blaj. Their joining channels form the most striking natural shape on the map.
The cathedral, schools and older streets form a compact centre that reflects the town's role as a religious and educational centre.
The open ground where the 1848 assembly took place is a broad, calm space on the map, set apart from the denser streets.
