Bolesławiec stands on the Bóbr River in Lower Silesia, in south-western Poland. The historic centre keeps its medieval shape: a rectangular market square with the town hall in the middle, ringed by short, tightly packed streets. A green belt marks the line where the town walls once stood, and newer districts spread out beyond it.
The town is famous across the world for its pottery. Stoneware from Bolesławiec, with its blue stamped patterns, has been made here for centuries and is still produced by local workshops. The other landmark is the railway viaduct over the Bóbr, a long stone structure from the 1840s and one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
