Te mapa
Boussu sits in the Borinage, the old coal-mining country west of Mons in the province of Hainaut. From above, the municipality reads as a string of joined villages rather than one centre. Streets run between long terraces of workers' housing, and the France–Belgium border lies only a short distance to the south and west.
The Haine valley sets the gentle grain of the land, and the transport lines that once carried coal still cross it in long, straight strokes. Slag heaps from the mining era show on a detailed map as rounded contours. Between them, residential blocks give way to fields and patches of woodland, and the built-up area thins towards the edges.
Boussu includes Hornu, home of the Grand-Hornu, a nineteenth-century mining complex built around a great oval courtyard and now listed by UNESCO among the major mining sites of Wallonia. A Boussu map poster keeps the ring of that courtyard beside the worker streets laid out around it, which is how the town's industrial past looks from the air.
The oval yard of the old mining works is one of the clearest geometric shapes in the Borinage, a deliberate piece of industrial planning among the ordinary terraced streets.
The French frontier runs close by, so the edge of the frame reaches towards another country's road network with no natural barrier between the two.
Boussu, Hornu and the neighbouring sections grew into one another, so the map shows several small cores tied together by long connecting streets.

For families with roots in the Borinage, this map is a way of keeping the streets of a mining community on the wall: the terraces, the rail lines and the courtyard at Hornu, reduced to clean black lines.
