Te mapa
Braniewo is the northernmost town of Warmia, a few kilometres from the border with Russia's Kaliningrad region. The Pasłęka river winds through it on its way to the Vistula Lagoon, and on a map that meandering line is the town's main feature. Streets gather on both banks and are linked by a handful of bridges.
The town has a long past. As Braunsberg it was an early seat of the Prince-Bishops of Warmia, and in the sixteenth century Cardinal Stanislaus Hosius founded a Jesuit college here that became an important centre of learning. Much of the historic centre was destroyed in 1945, so today's plan mixes older street lines with postwar rebuilding.
A Braniewo map poster shows a compact town shaped by its river. Railway lines cross the edges of the plan, fields and woods surround it, and the Pasłęka ties everything together. Printed in black and white, the curves of the river against the street pattern make a balanced, quiet composition.
The river loops through town toward the Vistula Lagoon, dividing the plan into banks joined by bridges. It is the strongest single line on the map.
The old core near the river keeps traces of the medieval street layout, rebuilt after wartime destruction. It forms the densest part of the print.
Braniewo sits very close to the Russian border. North of town, the map thins into fields, woods and roads heading toward the lagoon and the frontier.
