Bressuire stands in the north of Deux-Sèvres, in the Bocage, a landscape of small fields enclosed by hedges and sunken lanes. On a map the town rises above the valley of the Dolo, a small river, with the old centre knotted around its church and the ruined castle, and newer districts spreading outward along the roads to Cholet, Parthenay and Thouars.
The medieval castle, now a ruin, is one of the more extensive fortresses of western France, and its long ring of walls and towers still traces a distinct enclosure on the plan.
