Bukama sits on the Lualaba River, the upper course of the Congo, in Haut-Lomami province. The map is shaped by the river, which runs through a wide floodplain with channels, wetlands and islands. The town extends along the banks, with a modest network of streets and roads leading inland.
Bukama has long been a transport point where the railway from the Katanga copper region reaches the Lualaba, and historically it marked the start of river navigation on this stretch of the upper river. Fishing and farming along the river support much of daily life.
