Būkān lies in the south of West Azerbaijan province, in the Kurdish-speaking highlands between Lake Urmia and the Zagros ranges. From above, the city spreads across a wide valley floor, with a dense core of narrow streets giving way to newer neighbourhoods laid out in straighter lines. Farmland and orchards surround the built area, and low hills rise along its edges.
The city has grown quickly in recent decades and is one of the larger urban centres of Iranian Kurdistan, as well as an important place in Kurdish cultural life. The Simineh River and its tributaries water the surrounding land, which drains north across the plain toward Lake Urmia.

Main roads leave the city toward Mahabad, Saqqez and Miandoab, drawn as long lines across the valley. They reflect Būkān's role as a market town for the surrounding district.
