Te mapa
Caazapá is the capital of the department of the same name in southern Paraguay. It was founded in 1607 by the Franciscan friar Luis de Bolaños as a mission town, which makes it one of the oldest settlements in the country. The core of the map still shows that origin: a square grid of blocks around a central plaza.
Around the town, the land rolls gently, with streams, pasture and patches of forest. The roads leading out do not follow the grid. They take their own lines across the countryside toward neighbouring towns and farms, and on paper they look like loose threads running out from a neatly woven centre.
A Caazapá map poster shows four centuries of planning in one frame. The orderly blocks near the plaza are the most striking element, and they are set off by the freer lines of the surrounding land. It is a modest, well-proportioned town plan, and the black and white styles show its structure clearly.
The centre keeps the regular block pattern of an early seventeenth-century Franciscan foundation, arranged around a main square. It is the clearest shape on the map.
Routes leave the grid at their own angles and cross the rolling countryside. Their looser lines frame the tidy centre from every side.
Small watercourses and open farmland surround the town. They add soft, natural shapes to the edges of the composition.

Koteā ko Caazapá
People from Caazapá, and people who love Paraguay's mission heritage, hang this map for its combination of age and order. A town planned in 1607 still reads clearly on paper, and that makes a quietly remarkable print.
