Caivano lies in the flat, fertile country between Naples and Caserta, a landscape that has been farmed since antiquity and is now laced with infrastructure. From above, the historic centre is a tight cluster of narrow streets and courtyard blocks. Around it, newer neighbourhoods spread outward on more regular plots, and the whole town is edged by cultivated land.
The plain gives the map its character. With no hills or coastline to bend the streets, the town's shape comes from roads, railways and field boundaries, the long straight lines of an agricultural landscape that suburban growth has overtaken. Large road corridors cross the surrounding area and set firm edges against the finer pattern of the town.
