Canoinhas lies on the Planalto Norte of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, on rolling highland at a comfortable altitude. From above, the town has a clear centre of regular blocks, with neighbourhoods spreading along the roads and following the gentle rise and fall of the land. The Canoinhas River and smaller streams wind through the area, and patches of forest and farmland frame the edges.
The region has an important place in Brazilian history. In the early twentieth century it was part of the contested territory where the Contestado War was fought between 1912 and 1916. Canoinhas later developed as a centre of erva-mate production, the plant used to make chimarrão, which remains part of local identity.
