Te mapa
Capua sits in a deep meander of the Volturno River in Campania, north of Naples. From above, the river nearly encircles the historic centre, and on the landward side the town is closed off by bastioned fortifications. The result is one of the clearest urban shapes in southern Italy, a compact old town held inside water and walls.
The modern town was founded in the ninth century on the site of the Roman river port of Casilinum, after the ancient city of Capua, a few kilometres away at today's Santa Maria Capua Vetere, was destroyed. It became the seat of a Lombard principality, and its bridge over the Volturno has long carried the route of the Via Appia.
A Capua map poster shows that layered history in plain lines: the bending river, the dense medieval street pattern, the angular fortifications and the newer districts growing beyond them. It is a strong composition in black and white.
The river loops around the historic centre on three sides, giving Capua a rounded, almost island-like outline that anchors the entire map.
The angular lines of early modern fortifications close the landward side of the old town, their star-like geometry clearly visible from above.
The bridge over the Volturno carries the old line of the Via Appia into town, a crossing that has shaped Capua's importance for centuries.
