Casavatore lies just north of Naples in Campania, and on a map it is hard to tell where the city ends and the comune begins. The territory is very small, only about one and a half square kilometres, and nearly all of it is built up. Streets, apartment blocks and courtyards run edge to edge, joining seamlessly with the neighbouring towns of the Neapolitan hinterland.
Density is the defining fact. Casavatore is often cited as the most densely populated comune in Italy, with nearly nineteen thousand residents in that small area.
