Te mapa
Chefchaouen sits on the slopes of the Rif mountains in northern Morocco, beneath two peaks whose shape is often compared to horns. The town was founded in 1471 as a fortified settlement, and its medina, with walls and houses painted in shades of blue, has become one of the most photographed places in the country. Outa el Hammam square and the kasbah form its centre.
On a map, the medina is a dense web of narrow lanes, stairways and passages that follow the slope rather than any grid. Streets wind uphill toward Ras el Maa, the spring on the town’s eastern edge, where water flows down from the mountains. The newer town extends below the old walls, with wider roads and more regular blocks.
A Chefchaouen map poster shows the medina as an intricate knot of lines, tightly packed and full of turns. The contrast with the newer town and the surrounding mountain slopes gives the composition depth. Even without its famous colour, the town is unmistakable, defined by the way its streets climb, bend and gather around the old square.
The old town is a maze of narrow streets and steps that twist up the hillside, creating the densest and most detailed area of the map.
The main square and the walled kasbah beside it form the centre of the medina, a small open space surrounded by tightly packed streets.
At the eastern edge of the medina, the spring and its stream mark where the town meets the mountains above.

Koteā ko Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen is a place people remember for its light, its stairways and the view down from the hills. A map of its medina keeps those memories in view, and it makes a considered gift for travellers and anyone with family in the Rif.
