Cheyenne was founded in 1867 as the Union Pacific pushed its transcontinental line west across the plains, and the railroad still shapes the city's map. Tracks and yards run along the south side of downtown, with the historic depot at their edge. From there the street grid extends north toward the State Capitol and the residential neighbourhoods beyond.
The city sits at around six thousand feet on open high plains, and the land around it is wide and nearly treeless. Crow Creek winds along the south side of town, and Lions Park with Sloans Lake adds open space to the north. F. E. Warren Air Force Base occupies a broad area to the west, its curving roads distinct from the city's straight blocks.
Cheyenne is Wyoming's capital and its largest city, and it is known for Cheyenne Frontier Days, held every summer since 1897. A straight avenue runs north from the historic depot to the State Capitol. It gives the downtown grid a clear central line that anchors the whole composition.
Lions Park, Sloans Lake
North of the centre, the park and its lake form a soft open shape in the grid, one of the few patches of water on the dry plains around the city.
