Te mapa
Copiapó lies in the valley of the Copiapó River, a narrow strip of irrigated land running through the southern Atacama Desert. On a map the city stretches along the valley floor, with dry, steep hills on both sides. As a result its shape is long and narrow rather than round.
The historic centre keeps a Spanish colonial grid around the Plaza de Armas, a shaded square planted with pepper trees. From there the city extends up and down the valley, and newer districts climb the lower slopes. The river is often dry, but its course and the farmland beside it still mark a clear line through the urban area.
Copiapó has long been a mining centre. In 1851 Chile's first railway opened here, linking the city with the port of Caldera, and in 2010 the world followed the rescue of 33 miners trapped in the nearby San José mine. A Copiapó map poster shows a city defined by its valley and by the desert around it.
The city follows the Copiapó River valley in a long band. The desert hills press in on either side and limit how wide it can grow.
The central square sits within a regular colonial grid. This is the most orderly part of the map and the historic starting point of the city.
Newer neighbourhoods climb the lower slopes of the surrounding hills, where the streets stop abruptly and give way to empty desert terrain.

Copiapó is home and workplace for many people in the Atacama, including mining professionals who have spent years there. A map of the valley city is a meaningful keepsake of time in the north.
