Cornwall forms the far southwestern end of Great Britain, a peninsula that narrows westward to Land's End. The River Tamar runs along almost all of its border with Devon, so the county is nearly surrounded by water. The north coast faces the Atlantic with high cliffs and surf beaches, while the south coast is gentler, cut by long wooded estuaries such as the Fal and the Fowey.
Lizard Point, on the south coast, is the most southerly point of mainland Britain. St Michael's Mount rises from the bay beside Marazion and can be reached on foot across a causeway at low tide. Cornwall's long history of tin and copper mining left engine houses across the landscape, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006.
A Cornwall map poster shows the whole peninsula at once: the jagged Atlantic edge, the drowned river valleys of the south and the harbour towns in between. The A30 runs down the middle like a spine, connecting inland towns, while harbours such as St Ives, Padstow and Falmouth appear as small street clusters set into the coast.
The peninsula narrows to a final granite headland at its western tip, where the roads run out and the Atlantic surrounds the land on three sides.
The Fal estuary opens into a wide natural harbour near Falmouth, a branching shape of creeks and inlets on the south coast.
A small, steep tidal island in Mount's Bay, linked to Marazion by a causeway that appears and disappears with the tide.
