Te mapa
Cudahy covers just over one square mile in south-east Los Angeles County, and it is among the most densely populated cities in the United States. On the map it fits neatly into the wider street grid of the Gateway Cities. Unlike its neighbours, though, it is divided into unusually deep and narrow parcels, which give the residential blocks a striped, repeating texture.
Those lots go back to the town's origins. The land was once a ranch owned by the meatpacking businessman Michael Cudahy, who divided it into long plots meant for small farms and orchards. The name stayed. The farms are gone, but the parcel lines remain, now filled with houses, apartments and courtyards running back from the street.
A Cudahy map poster also shows the Los Angeles River along the city's eastern edge, a straight engineered channel with bike paths beside it. Nearby, industrial areas and major roads link the city to the neighbouring towns. At this scale the whole city fits comfortably in one frame, and each block is clear.
Deep, narrow parcels left from the original ranch subdivision give the residential blocks a distinctive striped pattern that differs from the surrounding grid.
The channelled river runs along the east side of the city, a strong straight line with open space and a path beside it.
Cudahy is small enough that the entire city fits on a single poster with room to spare, making every street legible.
