Te mapa
Dar el Beïda sits on the eastern side of the Algiers metropolitan area, on the flat land where the capital meets the Mitidja plain. It is best known as the location of Houari Boumediene Airport, Algeria's main international gateway, and the airport shapes the map of the municipality more than anything else.
From above, the runways are the most striking feature: long, straight strips laid over open ground, with terminals and aprons gathered beside them. The residential areas lie around this, a mix of older blocks, newer housing and wide arterial roads that connect the suburb with central Algiers and with the towns further east along the plain.
A Dar el Beïda map poster turns that mix into a strong graphic image. The geometry of the airfield contrasts with the finer grain of the neighbourhoods, and the motorways sweep through in clean curves. It is a map of movement and arrival as much as of streets and houses, which gives it a particular meaning for many people.
The runways of Houari Boumediene Airport cut across the map as long parallel bands, the boldest shapes on the sheet and the reason many travellers know the name Dar el Beïda.
Around the airfield the residential streets form a denser, finer texture, with blocks of housing and local roads filling the ground between the major routes.
Wide roads and motorways link Dar el Beïda to central Algiers and eastwards across the Mitidja, drawn as smooth sweeping lines through the suburb.
