Te mapa
Dartmouth lies on the eastern side of Halifax Harbour, opposite downtown Halifax. It is often called the City of Lakes, and the map shows why. More than twenty lakes are scattered through the community, and Lake Banook and Lake Micmac form a chain close to the old downtown. From above, water breaks up the street network everywhere you look.
Two suspension bridges, the Angus L. Macdonald and the A. Murray MacKay, cross the harbour to Halifax, and a passenger ferry has run between the two shores for a very long time. On the Dartmouth map poster these crossings tie the waterfront to the city across the harbour, and the Bedford Basin opens to the north.
The lakes near downtown are part of the Shubenacadie Canal, a nineteenth-century waterway that was built to connect Halifax Harbour to the Bay of Fundy. Lake Banook is well known for canoe and kayak racing and has hosted national and international regattas. The old downtown has a small grid close to the ferry terminal.
Lake Banook, Lake Micmac and many others are scattered through the city. They make Dartmouth one of the most watery maps on the Atlantic coast.
Two long suspension bridges cross to Halifax. On the map they are thin, precise lines over the wide surface of the harbour.
This historic waterway linked the harbour to the interior through the lakes. Its route can still be followed across the map from the harbour inland.

Koteā ko Dartmouth
The map is popular with paddlers, with Dartmouth residents who like being called the other side of the harbour, and with anyone who has lived in the Halifax area. The lakes and bridges are instantly recognisable.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a neighbourhood or year. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint shows the harbour and lakes very clearly.
