Te mapa
Demirci lies in the uplands of Manisa Province in western Turkey, well away from the Aegean coast. From above, the town sits in hilly country, and its streets bend to follow slopes and stream beds. The older quarters form a dense cluster of narrow lanes, while newer blocks spread along the main roads leading in and out of town.
Around the town, the land breaks into ridges, valleys and cultivated plots, with villages linked by winding roads. Streams run down towards the lower ground and leave thin green lines through the terrain. The contrast between the compact centre and the open, folded country around it gives the map a strong sense of place.
Demirci is widely known for its carpet- and kilim-weaving tradition, and the town's name is familiar to collectors of Anatolian rugs. There is something of that craft in the Demirci map poster as well, where streets knot together densely at the centre and loosen towards the edges. Printed in black and white, it reads almost like a woven pattern.
Narrow, irregular lanes pack together at the heart of town, the densest and most intricate part of the whole print.
Hills and valleys surround Demirci, and roads leaving town trace long, curving routes through the folded landscape.
Demirci's long carpet and kilim tradition gives a woven-pattern town a fitting portrait in fine black-and-white lines.
