Diksmuide is in West Flanders, on the River Yser, which flows through a flat landscape of polders and drainage ditches toward the North Sea. The town centre is compact, arranged around a large market square with the church of Saint Nicholas close by. Streets radiate from the centre toward the river and the open countryside beyond.
The town lay on the front line during the First World War and was almost completely destroyed. It was rebuilt afterwards in its earlier style. On the far bank of the Yser stands the IJzertoren, a tall peace monument and museum. Nearby, the preserved trenches of the Dodengang, the Trench of Death, recall the fighting along the river.

The Yser
The river bends past Diksmuide on its way to the coast. The IJzertoren stands on its bank, marking the line where the front held during the war.
