Te mapa
Dougabougou lies in the Ségou region of central Mali, in the flat country north of the Niger river where large irrigation schemes turned dry land into farmland. From above, the settlement is a cluster of streets and compounds surrounded by fields divided by long, straight canals.
The canals are what make this landscape readable from the air. Water taken from the Niger is carried through main channels and smaller distributaries, and the fields line up along them in regular blocks. The result is an unusually geometric landscape set in the wider Sahel.
A Dougabougou map poster shows the town at the centre of that system. Compact neighbourhoods and the roads leading out of town sit within a framework of canals and field boundaries, and the broad, level plain continues to every edge of the frame.
Straight irrigation canals cross the land around the town. They are the most striking lines on the poster and show how water from the Niger reaches these fields.
Farmland is laid out in regular plots along the canals. From above this forms an orderly grid, very different from the natural shapes of the surrounding Sahel.
The built-up area is a dense cluster of compounds and lanes. On the poster it forms a concentrated centre within the open, irrigated plain.
